A signature program of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, IREE has sought out the most promising new renewable energy ideas and distributes funding from Xcel Energy’s Renewable Development Fund to provide them with the resources needed to bring them to life.
In the 2012 Legislative session (SF 2181), the decision was made to discontinue direct funding to IREE from the Renewable Energy Development Fund to support these innovative research and demonstration programs. Subsequently, the decision was made by the University to sunset the IREE program.
Ongoing IREE grant activity and reporting will continue.
IREE exists: To promote statewide economic development, sustainable and healthy ecosystems, and national energy security through development of bio‐based and other renewable resources and processes.
During the 2003 and 2007 legislative sessions, the Minnesota Legislature directed portions of the Xcel Energy Renewable Development Fund and Conservation Improvement Program to IREE for renewable energy research and demonstration.
