Initiative for Renewable Energy & the Environment

A signature program of the University of Minnesota’s INSTITUTE ON THE ENVIRONMENT, IREE seeks out the most promising new renewable energy ideas and distributes funding from Xcel Energy’s Renewable Development Fund to provide them with the resources needed to bring them to life.

IREE Mission

IREE is a central part of Minnesota’s renewable energy economy, mobilizing more than 400 experts around one vital mission: To promote statewide economic development, sustainable and healthy ecosystems, and national energy security through development of bio‐based and other renewable resources and processes. Renewable Development Fund

During the 2003 legislative session, the Minnesota Legislature directed portions of the Xcel Energy Renewable Development Fund and Conservation Improvement Program to IREE for renewable energy research and demonstration. During the 2007 session the Minnesota state legislature reauthorized funding to IREE.  Learn more
